I wanted to reach out to you for some help identifying any tools the college has invested in to help instructors identify the use of Chat GB

Answer

The best tool supported by the district is Turnitin.com and we have it integrated into Canvas. The directions are below if you need them. Turnitin will flog the paper if the algorithm thinks 30% or more of the paper uses AI generated text. However, if a student knows what they are doing with AI you won't be able to detect they are using AI. For instance https://undetectable.ai purpose is to "humanize" ai generated text so an AI detector will not detect it.

My personal opinion is your time is better invested in teaching students how to write with AI. AI is great at acting the role as a tutor or "more knowledgeable other" which can advance the students' learning quicker. I am doing an FPG workshop today in the library at 9:30 am L235 on how to get started doing this, if you are free. If not, I am repeating both the virtual and in person workshop in January.

Directions for using Turnitin in Canvas - setting up an assignment so students can upload their file and Turnitin will check for plagiarism and AI.
In Course Navigation, click Assignments.
Click the +Assignment button at the top right.
After adding the assignment title, instructions, points, and other details, in the Submission Type dropdown, select Online.
Under Online Entry Options select Text Entry and/or File Upload.
In Plagiarism Review dropdown, select Turnitin.
Configure the options for the Turnitin plagiarism checker based on your preferences.
Configure the rest of the assignment options (Group Assignment, Peer Review, Availability/Due Dates) and click either the Save & Publish or Save button at the bottom right.
